Wilfred groaned as he rolled out of bed. For reasons unknown to himself, he'd decided to stay aboard the Majestic. And if he wanted to stay on board then he'd better get himself out of bed. He was so tired though, more tired then if he hadn't slept all night. This was very strange as he'd done to bed early from shore leave on the planet. His legs barely held him as he stood up and hobbled his way to the bathroom. Upon passing the mirror though he let out a yelp as a reflection that was not his own greeted him. It was him, but it wasn't. He certainly didn't normally have large green spots all over his face. Wilfred threw on clothes as fast as his body would allow and headed straight for sickbay.
Sekat surveyed the medical facility, a small smile of satisfaction on his face. It was only the barest hint of a smile, only detectable really to those who knew him well enough. Sickbay was clean, it was organized and ready just in case. He turned at the sound of the doors opening, his cane making a soft clicking sound on the deck as he did so. "Ensign Wexler," he announced by way of greeting, "you..do not look so good..."
"Oh good," Wilfred retorted, "I'm glad it's not just my opinion. What are these doc, dragon pox? I woke up like this and I don't want to live with them forever. Put me out of my misery if that's the case." Wilfred fell onto a biobed and barely had the energy to roll over.
"I doubt such drastic measures will be necessary ensign," Sekat commented as he moved closer to the bed. Setting his cane to the side so he could use both his hands, he flipped open a tricorder and started taking scans. "You only noticed these this morning?" he asked quietly, "any prior signs of malady? Headaches? General malaise?" He paused. "Are they just confined to your facial area, or are the spots all across your body?"
"Yes, no and just feeling so tired I can barely stand. A little bit sick to my stomach I guess, but I thought that was because I hadn't eaten anything yet today. At least when I woke up, before I saw my face." Wilfred blinked a few times and watched Sekat scan him.
Nodding, the Vulcan took his time with his readings, preferring to be thorough. "Can you roll up your sleeves a little for me?" he asked, briefly looking up at his patient. "If you have not eaten anything, would you like to try something light? you do need energy, so you do need to eat."
Wilfred did as he asked. There were no spots on his arms but they did look as if they were warm, there was a reddish tint to his skin. "I guess," he answered. "Maybe just some toast."
Nodding a second time, Sekat gave quick instructions to a nearby nurse to bring his patient some buttered toast and a mug of tea. "your temperature appears to be elevated from Human norm," he continued, "can you tell me what you have been doing and where you have been the past few days?"
"Umm, on the planet. I was doing some sun bathing and then I went shopping downtown. I kinda got lost but met this nice lady who pointed me in the right direction. I mean I guess I could have called the ship, but that seemed like a waste of energy and I wasn't scared to just wander around a bit."
"Was there anything particular about this lady?" he asked, while preparing to take a few blood samples. "I can probably rule out the sunlight because everyone has been in the sun one way or another and no-one else has reported sick."
"No," Wilfred shook his head. "I don't think so, the typical helpful Maragarian. Why? You think she gave me this?!" Wilfred would have gotten excited if he had the energy to do anything more than nibble on his toast and sip his tea in a barely sitting up position. "So what's wrong with me?"
"I do not know," Sekat confessed, "however I am going to quarantine you here for the time being. In the mean time I am going to run every possible test I can think of and I need all the information you can give me. If there is any change in how you feel, you must tell me immediately."
"Thanks Doc," Wilfred said, becoming more nervous by the second. There wasn't anything he could do about it though. He just had to remain where he was and take whatever was thrown at him.
"You are in good hands here ensign," Sekat promised, "we will do our best to have you back on your feet soon, you have my word."
Wilfred nodded. "My throat is starting to get sore," he mumbled as the doors to sickbay opened and one of the most beautiful women Wilfred had ever seen entered. She had long reddish brown hair and blue eyes. She was a nurse apparently, he guessed from her uniform. His already fast heart rate sped up as he watched her. When she noticed him watching her she smiled in his direction which made his heart rate jump even faster.
Following his patient's gaze, Sekat beckoned the beautiful nurse over. "Nurse Sadie, would you mind staying with Ensign Wexler for a little while? I need to take my samples to the lab for analysis. However, if you do so I must ask you to remain in sickbay until I know for certain this affliction is not contagious." He squeezed Wexler's arm. "I will return shortly."
Wilfred gave him a look of almost complete and total panic. He was going to leave him alone with her?! "Uhhhh," Wilfred started to say, but Sekat was gone before he could really protest much and he didn't want to hurt the new girls feelings. "Hi." He said stupidly.
The nurse smiled sympathetically as she reached to tuck him in. "Hi," she replied, "I'm Sadie, what's your name?"
He swallowed hard. With his luck his vocal cords were going to stop working. He also debated on whether she should call him Will or Fred but gave up and said, "Wilfred. My stupid parents couldn't decide on a name so they basically gave me two."
"I like your name just as it is dear," Sadie smiled, fussing over him some more. "Are you comfortable? Can I get you anything else?"
"No," he said, completely flabbergasted that she wasn't treating him like most women did. "I'm fine . . . well not fine . . . no I don't need anything. God I hope I'm not contagious," he said out loud. "You're a nurse? Well of course you are, Sekat said you were. How long have you been on Majestic?"
"Ahh not that long," the nurse replied, reaching to fluff up his pillow a little. "yes I'm a nurse dear, and right now I'm here to take care of you. And if you really were contagious do you think the doctor would've let me anywhere near you?" Even if he did look hidious with those green spots on his face, Sadie wouldn't be a good nurse if she couldn't see beyond the ugliness some diseases caused.
Wilfred shrugged. His brain was tired and so he just let her fluff his pillow as he watched her carefully. "Thanks," he whispered. He could freak out later and with his history, he probably would. The warmth made him feel better though. "I think you picked the right career," he mumbled quietly.
"That's what my mama said too," Sadie smiled, running her fingers through his hair. "Do you want another sip of tea?"
His stomach had settled and he was still nibbling on the toast Sekat had brought him. His eyes got wide as she ran her fingers through his hair. "No thanks, I'm fine." Wilfred was starting to wonder if he had passed out and was dreaming this up.
"Alright. I'll be close by then if you need anything," Sadie smiled, "perhaps you could try and sleep a little. Conserve your energy because you look very flushed."
It only made Wilfred blush further. "Yeah, right." He was tired, but the truth was he was afraid to sleep. He was afraid he wouldn't wake up. And maybe, just maybe, he now had a reason to look forward to waking up every day as he watched Sadie go back to her other duties.
