Mission: Run Afoul
Location: Arcana Lounge
625 words - 1.3 OF Standard Post Measure

Jane yawned. What Lhaes had given her had indeed helped her sleep but it had also completely knocked her out. All Jane wanted was to sleep normally, even if she was a light sleeper. She just had too much on her mind and so had decided to go for a walk. She'd avoided contacting Hak since the explosion because she didn't want to appear weak even though he knew her better than anyone else in the universe. And she knew he didn't think her weak. Looking up she spotted someone she'd talked to just the other day. She approached his table carefully. "Hello again. Mr. Price wasn't it?"

Drew looked up. "Captain?" He said, almost choking on his beer. Clearly he wasn't expecting company. "Uh..I mean yes, Captain." He said, red as a beet. 'Take a seat?"

"Are you sure you don't mind?" He seemed a bit jumpy, like the first time they had met. "I don't want to disturb you."

"No worries." Drew said. "Just wasn't expecting you to come over" he said. "I get that way sometimes. Pull up a chair." He smiled.

"I think I'm already living up to my reputation as an odd captain. Not many captains would sit with junior officers in a public place such as this. They prefer to keep the quiet of their ready rooms and quarters. But, we are all in this together and I couldn't sleep," she offered as explanation. "I thought I might as well walk and maybe have a drink but conversations sounds much better."

"I totally agree" Drew said, smiling. "Tell you the truth I was getting lonely sitting alone. So, yeah. Conversation sounds awesome" he sipped his drink.

Jane hoped he wasn't going to get the wrong idea about her sitting down. She wasn't interested in any one night stands, or a relationship, her life was too complicated as it was. When the waiter came by she ordered a sparkling cider and then made herself comfortable from across the table. "Why are you up so late? Not that it's any of my business," she added.

"Is it that late? I hadn't noticed" Drew laughed.

"It is. 0100 Hours." Jane wondered what had been distracting him so that he'd lost track of time. "Where are you from if you don't mind my asking?"

"I'm from Earth. Pretty exotic eh?" Drew said, grinning. "Ok. I lied. I never saw Earth until I was six. Born on USS Adrienne, Galaxy class."

"Well technically you're still from Earth. If you are human that is. All humans are originally from there." She gave a shrug of her shoulders. "I take it one or both of your parents were in Starfleet?"

"Civilians actually. They taught history in the class on the ship." He smiled.

"Ah, I see. So why did you decide to join the fleet then? If . . . if I'm being nosy don't hesitate to tell me. Just because I'm a Captain doesn't mean I shouldn't behave myself in others company." Jane took another sip of her drink and watched him closely.

"I don't know to be honest. Familiarity I guess. Lived on ships all my life I couldn't imagine not being on one. Know what I mean?" He sighed.

She nodded. A lot of people found it hard to step out of their comfort zones and go in a completely new direction from what they were used to. But she had, and she didn't regret her choice. At least, she hadn't until this mission. She looked out the window and didn't answer for a bit. "It takes a lot of courage and insight to do something different."
