| General Overview | Vanya loves puzzles. She loves to find information and she loves to answer questions--even if she has to take time to research the answer. In other words, she loves her job. She also loves word play and puns. To her, they are the highest form of wit. She is an opportunist in that she believes life is short so you need to take chances and opportunities as they come. | Personal History | Vanya was born and raised on a small colony in the "backwater region" of the Federation. Named Romanov, after the last Russian dynasty, it was a peaceful colony devoted to learning and the arts. She learned to play several stringed instruments and to appreciate music and literature. Both her parents were teachers. Her father designed computer systems and her mother taught history. Both were well-respected. While Vanya and her brother were away on a school trip during the Dominion War, the colony was attacked. The shuttle pilot informed them that not only were her parents dead, but the entire colony was wiped out. Instead of going home, the kids from the colony were taken to another colony and fostered by families willing to take in the survivors. She and her brother were sent to separate families and kept in touch as much as they could, but as they grew older, they drifted apart. Vanya never really fit in and spent most of her time on the computer researching this and that. She learned a lot about her home and she learned how to find information. It became a game to see what she could get into without getting caught. Once she graduated, she took advanced courses in computers, linguistics, and encryption. She met John Peel, a member of Starfleet Intelligence while he was on assignment and helped him bust an Orion drug ring. With his help, she started doing independent jobs for Starfleet Intelligence. After a few years, the two married and Vanya officially became a civilian specialist working for Starfleet's Covert Ops. Two years after their marriage, John was killed in the line of duty. Vanya threw herself into her work, becoming the best of the best when it came to information gathering, encryption, and computer security. During this time, she was persuaded to join Starfleet. Her brother left shortly after he graduated and Vanya hasn't heard from him since. She's had no luck finding him, even though she continues to look every few years. She currently believes he changed his name to sever ties with his past and start over. Now she works as a Starfleet Intelligence Officer, but she has been known to do a job or two on the side, as a favor. When undercover, she will often go by Emma Peel. |
