Part of every Department Head's job was to survey her crew and determine if the facilities were adequate. At this moment, the agenda brought Jex to the ship's brig. It was a vital piece of the security puzzle, one that would hold the most dangerous of people. It had to be secure and those manning the station needed to be capable. With PADD in hand, the half Betazoid made her way through the bulky security doors and into the holding area.

She walked toward the single crew member at the station, a Human with disheveled brown hair. With a purposeful click of her boot on the hard floor, Jex introduced herself, "Hello, I'm Lieutenant Jexasi Rai. How are you?" She tried to get a feeling of how this man felt. Jex was a bit nervous, as she always was when meeting new people. It made her come across as almost completely business-like, maybe even a bit intimidating.

Wilfred looked up at the clicking sound and promptly dropped the PADD he was holding. He started to pick it up and then realized he should be standing at attention. The result was a sort of stiff straightening mid bend which made his back seize up and he gasped out in pain, "Fine Ma'am. I mean Lieutenant. Lieutenant Ma'am." He realized how stupid that sounded and fought not to close his eyes in protest.

A slight pursing of her lips gave the outward evidence that Jex was fighting a smile. You didn't need to be an empath to be able to tell that Wilfred was nervous and excitable. "Are you alright, Ensign?" she asked, a bit concerned that a greeting may have injured her prison guard.

"Uh, just a little stiff." He straightened himself up the rest of the way despite his back making a popping noise and sending a jolt of pain down into his leg. "Perfect." He croaked out. Wilfred didn't have a problem working with women, but why did they have to be all . . . feminine. And this one had big dark eyes he was staring into. Suddenly he had a panic attack at the thought that she might be Betazoid, he hadn't bothered to check her profile.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to devour your mind," Jex said as she noticed the man in near panic as he zoned in on her eyes. "My abilities are rather limited compared to most Betazoids," she followed, trying to reassure Wifred. That was always the problem, most people seemed to fear what her species could do with their mind. She hated the stereotype, but would admit that she used it to her advantage during questioning.

He willed himself to calm down, not that it ever worked well, and sucked in a deep breath. At least she had been honest about who or what she was. "Yes, ma'am." He said quietly. "Or do you prefer Sir?"

"I'm not a Captain, so ma'am is perfectly fine," Jex replied with a smile. "How have you found the facilities?" she asked as an alternate to asking if the place would hold a bloodthirsty criminal.

"Fine ma'am, I mean I haven't had to lock anyone up yet . . . not that it happens often on a starship. But everything seems to work." Wilfred tried to think of what else she would like to hear but a brig that wasn't busy was a good thing for her.

"Very good," Jex replied. She had always found the phaser training program to be fairly relaxing, and Wilfred looked as though he could use some relaxation. Offering a hand of friendship, she offered, "How current is your phaser certification?"

He blinked. "Uh, it's been a while." Truth was he'd barely passed and he only practiced when he felt he had to. Wilfred felt guilty, he knew he should have gotten to it sooner. He really didn't want to let this new boss down, she'd been nice to him so far.

Picking on a slight sense of guilt, she decided to go easy on him, "I'll make an appointment. It never hurts to brush up a bit." Trying her best to give a disarming smile, she added, "If that is alright with you."

Ugh, she had to smile. "Yes, Ma'am." Wilfred answered her and then deflated once she'd turned on her heels to leave. Now what was he going to do?
