Sadie stretched as she woke up, before snuggling briefly at the warm body that lay next to her. She smiled as she wrapped her arm around it. "Good morning," she whispered before sitting up. It was the sitting up that did it as a wave of vertigo hit her. She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing deeply before deciding that wasn't going to cut it. Without a word she ran from the bed, and straight for the bathroom.
Wilfred was perplexed. One minutes Sadie was curling against him and he had a huge smile on his face though his eyes weren't open yet and the next minute she was gone, poof. He sat up, slipped on some pants and walked to the bathroom door. "What's going on? Are you alright?"
"I'm fine..." The sound of running water could be heard. "Just feeling super nauseous for no good reason. I'm fine, really..." Except she didn't seem fine, by the sound of her voice. "Probably something I ate?"
"Maybe," Wilfred didn't look convinced. Replicators these days didn't allow for food borne viruses on starships, unless she'd eaten something that hadn't come from the replicator. "Maybe you should visit sickbay, I mean for a scan since you are headed there anyway for work?"
Sadie nodded carefully, using the sink to steady herself. "Will you come with me?"
"Of course. I'm thinking about carrying you . . ." Wilfred said honestly. He did not like the way she was looking at all. His insides were starting to twist around too with worry. "Come on. Oh, I guess you better put some clothes on first."
She gave him a faint smile. "I think that's a given," she said, taking his arm for support back into the bedroom. "I don't think using the transporter will be such a good idea. I'm sorry to ruin what was a great morning my love, but I really don't feel so good."
"Pfft, don't be silly. You can't help not feeling well. And last night was memorable enough. Actually every moment I've spent with you in the last few weeks has been memorable." He smiled and brushed a strand of her red hair out of her face.
She burrowed into him. "I'm not going anywhere," she promised, feeling like he might need that reassurance. "Other than sickbay..."
"Yes, sickbay, right." Once she had clothes on, he looped an arm around her and walked her there slowly. When they entered he looked around for the doctor.
Natasha was just finishing with another patient when she heard the doors to sickbay open and close. She tapped the shoulder of one of the nurses nearby, asked her to finish assisting the other patient, and walked over to the couple standing in the doorway.
The young woman looked pale and in obvious pain, and the man looked concerned and confused.
Gesturing to one of the beds, Natasha greeted them and said, "Come over here, let's get you on the bed."
Sadie walked over and climbed onto the bed. "I woke up feeling really sick this morning," she explained, "and I can't really think a reason why." She looked over at Wilfred, wanting him to stay close.
Wilfred took her hand and stood by the biobed though he didn't say anything. He nervously glanced at the doctor. Girls had always made him nervous, except Sadie. Well she had at first. But she didn't anymore really. He sometimes still blushed when she suggested things but wasn't really the same.
Sadie smiled gratefully before turning anxious eyes to the doctor. "How bad is it?"
Natasha took some preliminary scans while the woman spoke, listening and nodding, while still watching for anything unusual.
"Well, based on what I'm seeing so far, your vital signs look great, though your heart rate is a touch faster than normal."
She put the tricorder away and smiled warmly at the couple.
"I don't think there's anything to worry about, but I would like to take some more detailed scans, just to be absolutely sure. But in the mean time, I'll give you an antiemitic for the nausea," she said, as she filled a hypospray and pressed it against the woman's neck.
Natasha straightened and looked at both of them. "Now, before I start my scan, I do have some personal questions for you guys, if you wouldn't mind. Of course, whatever you tell me is completely confidential, even to the captain. Are you okay with that?"
Carefully, Sadie turned her head to look at Wilfred, then back at the doctor. "Go ahead," she said quietly, not quite sure where this was going.
Wilfred blushed. What exactly what she was going to ask. But if it would help Sadie he would even answer the questions if he needed to.
Natasha noticed their discomfort and offered a reassuring smile. "I just have some suspicions, but before I do any more detailed tests to confirm, I need to know if you have been sexually active in the last month or so? I know it's an awkward question, I apologize, but it's important. Once again, your answers will not leave this room without your express, written permission."
"Ehhh..." Sadie's face went scarlet. "We have been yes," she finally answered, "a number of times ma'am."
Wilfred thought he was going to die. He stared at Sadie and wondered why she had to mention anything other than the word 'yes' in response to the doctor's question. He took a deep breath. Had he given Sadie some horrible sexually transmitted disease? He didn't see how since he'd only ever been with one other woman and it had been ages ago.
"I'm sorry, one more awkward question, and I'll move on, I promise." Natasha cleared her throat as she reached for something in one of the nearby drawers. "Have you been...together within the past few weeks? Going back about three or four?"
Wilfred looked as if he were about to faint. "That would be around the first time yes. Could you please get to the point Doctor? I'm feeling kind of hot at the moment."
Sadie was starting to feel a little faint and squeezed Wilfred's hand tightly. "Just... just tell us doctor, how bad is it?"
Natasha looked from Sadie to Wilfred and back to Sadie. "Sadie, you're pregnant."
The nurse went white, her fingers all but crushing Wilfred's hand. "What?"
"I am so sorry," Wilfred looked at Sadie and in addition to losing all feeling in his hand he lost all feeling in his legs and crumpled to the floor, having fainted dead away from shock.
Butts, here we go, Natasha thought, rushing over to Wilfred and scanning him quickly, just to be on the safe side and looked back up at Sadie and took a minute to gather her thoughts before continuing with Sadie's exam.
"Is he alright?" Sadie asked as she leaned over the edge of the bed, "and are you sure? Are you sure it's not something else?"
Wilfred came too almost as quickly as he had fainted. He looked confused as he glanced up at the ceiling and at the two women who were now staring down at him "What happened?"
"You fainted honey," Sadie smiled, though her brow was still creased with concern. "Are you alright?"
He blinked up at her, rubbing the back of his head where he must have bumped it on the way down. Suddenly it came to him what the doctor had said. "You're pregnant?"
"Apparently," Sadie replied slowly, reaching down to help him up. "I think all we need now is to know how long..."
Natasha stood up and smiled at them reassuringly. "I'd say a few weeks, not much longer. We'll obviously keep a very close eye on you, just to be sure, and I can assist you with anything you may need during the pregnancy. For now, though, do you have any other questions for me?" Nat pulled a chair close to the bed for Wilfred and walked over to the other side of the bed to check Sadie's vitals one more time.
"She's okay though right? I mean everything looks fine?" Wilfred asked, sitting down so that he didn't fall over again. He rubbed his face and reached out to squeeze Sadie's hand.
She nodded. "Absolutely fine. I'd like to see you once a week, just to keep tabs on everything and make sure things progress as they should, but as of right now, you are in perfect health."
'Once a week? Isn't that a bit.... much?" Sadie frowned, looking over at Wilfred. "We're both Human.... I don't see how anything would be out of the ordinary."
"Normally, yes, but being that this was, based on your reaction to the news, not a planned pregnancy and the fact that we are in space, I would like to keep an extra close eye, at least until the end of the first trimester," Nat said, adding, "It's just a precaution, but if you would like, we could set up an appointment for every other week and play it by ear on in-between weeks. If you feel any pain, or anything unusual, or if you even feel...off in any way, you come right here. Of course, the choice is yours, I'm amenable to whatever will work best for the two...or, three, I guess, of you."
"Sadie, I need to get some air," Wilfred suddenly muttered. "I'll be right back." He said squeezing her hand and hurrying out of the room.
"Every other week is fine thank you doctor." Sadie hopped off the bed. "I best go after him..."
