Though on board for a few days now, there was still something Lhaes needed to do. With every assignment, he carried a few items -albeit some of them safely locked away from prying tiny hands- that still needed the attention of the security chief.
Approaching the office he carried a small case under his arm. "Good morning lieutenant," he greeted the woman, "do you have a moment?"
With her crew still making themselves familiar with the ship's systems and taking inventory, now was the perfect time to for a short break. Dropping her PADD to her side, Jex nodded. "Sure thing, what can I do for you?" she asked. Security and Intel were two departments that worked together often, so Jex wanted to make a good first impression.
Lhaes set the case down and opened it for her before handing her a PADD. "I am accustomed to carrying various antidotes after having been subject to poisoning several times over the past years. As some may he dangerous under normal circumstances, I am required to register them with the security chief," the Romulan started.
He felt a little annoyed for having to do this at every assignment, even if he understood the necessity. "I also carry some personal weapons at all times," he added, producing his Honour Blade from his left boot and two kailune from the waist band of his pants. "Both are coated in a sedative."
Jex read the PADD carefully, normally she would skim through but the mention of assassination attempts and possible dangers piqued her interest. After reading, the Chief of Security grabbed a nearby triccorder and scanned the case full of chemicals. As everything matched what was listed, Jex asked, “Just how many times have you been poisoned?”
Before she got an answer, the Chief of Intelligence produced a variety of weapons. Knowing that Starfleet generally kept rather loose regulations regarding personal melee weapons, Jex decided to give her approval. She signed with her thumbprint. “Business first, you’re going to have to stop by Sickbay to have the doctor analyze the sedative.” Nodding that business talk was through, the Chief asked, “I am curious, you have to tell me some of those stories.”
"It's been too many times to count, and with three young children I'd like to be prepared," Lhaes answered. "One of those times it was in a specialty class at the academy. Our instructor had a range of poisons, all non-lethal of course and we had to test them to experience some of the effects." He paused as he recalled the event. "I had some peers who felt a Romulan should not be attending the academy so they went out of their way to try and remove me. This included poisoning."
He paused again, a chill running down his spine at the memory. "That morning I already wasn't feeling too great, and having experienced it a few times before already, I knew I had already been poisoned with something. As I didn't know what, in class I selected one of the instructor's potions that would react differently than predicted, if the subject had already been administered with something. Contrary to what my classmates believed, I actually did pay attention in class." He smiled thinly. "Suffice to say I got very, very sick indeed."
"I can imagine, and a good thing you picked a few things up in the class," Jex responded, a look of concern covering her face. "I'm a bit surprised that cadets like that would even make it to the Academy." With how concerned for his safety and that of his family, Jex realized that his fear may have another layer to it, "Those cadets were apprehended, weren't they?"
Sensing her concern with little effort, the Romulan smiled and nodded. "Oh yes, they were apprehended and drummed right out of the academy. Wasn't the first time, nor the last time someone wanted to kill me either. There were plenty who thought a Romulan didn't belong in the academy, and that I had to be a spy." He grinned. "I'm a spy alright, but I was born and raised on Betazed."
"We do have Betazed in common," Jex replied, already having read Lhaes' dossier. Closing her tricorder, the Chief of Security added, "For the record, I have no problem with you being Romulan. If anyone gives you any trouble, please come by my office. I don't want a crew assassination attempt to happen under my watch."
"If I have any suspicions I will let you know immediately," Lhaes promised, while clearing his personal weapons away, "however if anyone attacks my family I will retaliate. I'm not a fighter by any means, but I will defend my children at all cost."
"That is understandable, I only request that you attempt to call for a security emergency before hostilities break out," Jexasi nodded, she didn't need her limited empathetic abilities to feel the Laes' determination. "It's my duty to defend everyone aboard, including your children."
"Of course." That went without saying. "If I have a chance to I will but if there's no time I'll do what I have to do first."
With a nod, Jex replied, "Deal." Suddenly the realities of being aboard a starship instead of a fairly stable station were beginning to hit Jex.
