Transfer orders shown to the security officer who had barred his way initially, Lhaes had since then gotten his belongings squared away in his newly assigned quarters and had gotten his children and pets settled with the holo-nanny. "You two behave and take care of your little brother," he told the twin girls, before leaving to find his new commanding officer.
Instead, as he discovered, his orders instructed him to go meet with the new XO of the ship. Sighing to himself, the newly reinstated intelligence chief turned around and headed in the opposite direction, now up to the office of the second in command.
PADD firmly clutched in his hand, the Romulan reached to press the chime.
Shev sat at his desk, squirming slightly. The chair and him were having a war over comfort, and the chair was winning. So Shev distracted himself with work. He had a padd in hand containg the personnel file of the ships CIO. He was just about to read it when the chime rang.
Wonder who that is? he thought. "It's open" he called out.
Stepping within sensor range, Lhaes watched the door slide aside and he stepped through. "Lieutenant Commander Lhaes Sommers, reporting for duty sir," he said smartly, respecting the Andorian's more senior position by addressing him as sir. He offered the PADD he was holding in his hand. "My transfer orders."
Shev nodded, impressed by the man's formality. "At ease " he said. He took the orders with a smile. "Care to sit down?"
"Yes sir," the man said, instantly sitting down. Seeing an Andorian smile, it felt a little unnerving, especially since he couldn't recall having served with them before. "I've just arrived but got my family settled first."
"Nothing wrong with that." Shev said. "Family is important." he nodded. "Can I get you anything before we get to talking, Commander?"
"No, thank you, I'm good," the Romulan replied, "and I agree, family is very important. My sister serves too. Last I heard she is headed to the Nogura..."
"Sounds good. I've heard great things about that ship." He said. "I have a cousin on Archer IV myself." He continued, reading the orders. "Quite the impressive file."
"Nothing impressive about it sir, I'm not proud of some of the things I've had to do. But there it is, and you have near full access. There's also things I rather not talk about but I'm sure you can see for yourself which events they are." He shrugged. "I am who I am sir, and I don't intend to change who I am. If there's crew who have issues with Romulans I'd rather avoid them for now so they can see for themselves I'm not the enemy. I was born and raised on Betazed, my family, the only family I remember, is all betazoid."
"Fair enough. However, for the record. All I see is a Starfleet officer." Shev began. "I'd rather get to know you. Not get hung up on "Romulan". If that's alright."
"I would prefer that you did," Lhaes smiled, "because I am a Starfleet officer. Now...I'd like to know something about you sir. Are you a family man?"
"I have been bonded, yes." He smiled. "I think of family and friends on Andor frequently"
"And you have children?" the Romulan continued. Asking questions was what he was trained to do, so why not start now? Even if normally, his way of going about it was a little bit more covert and under the table.
"Not yet, but we're still hoping" he said. "We have helped with neighbors children though." he said. "Not the same but it's something."
"It's something," Lhaes agreed, "and I can tell from experience that it can be very nice to have help. Your mate, is she Andorian too?" He assumed so but one could never be certain of course. And if they were hoping, then perhaps she wasn't Andorian, or she wasn't a she at all... even there Lhaes made no assumptions.
"She is. Well, Aenar actually." He began. "She works as a teacher back home" He cleared his throat. "Had leave and had to get some records at the Starfleet academy annex. Met by chance."
"Aenar and Andorians are compatible," Lhaes answered knowingly, his medical skills coming in handy after all. "Would she not rather be here with you, and teach on the ship?"
"To be honest, hadn't thought about that." Shev said. "I'll call her and ask her. I'm sure she'd say yes though"
"Of course she would say yes." The Romulan smiled. "I've taken up enough of your time sir. Unless you have further questions for me I'd better see to my physical while the children are settled for their nap."
"Of course. See to your family and your medical. Plenty of time to talk later on." Shev said.
"Yes sir." The Romulan stood but didn't offer his hand. "It was good to meet with you sir."
"Likewise" the Andorian replied
