It was lunch time, and Kav had decided to go taste the samples of a chef other than his father. Even though he hasn't eaten his father's cuisine in a while, and even though any meal is fine for him as a Vulcan. He still couldn't help but think he hadn't met the chef that could top his father. Here was an opportunity to try.
He stepped towards the kitchen to find the ship's chef. "Chef O'Malley?" He asked without changing the expression on his face.
"Tha' be me," an accented voice came from behind the counter. Patrick leaned forward, spotting the Vulcan easily. "Can I help you?"
He put his hands on the counter and leaned to the chef. "I would like the chef special of the day." Even though his tone was emotionless and he was a Vulcan, usually every thing would suffice. But he knew if he were to write his father, his father would want to know about this other chef.
"Fancy pumpkin soup or risotto?" Patrick asked as he listed today's choices. "The soup is vegetarian, the risotto I'd have to remake as it does contain meat." He knew Vulcans were generally vegetarian but it wouldn't be the first time he'd see a vulcan who did appreciate chicken.
"I will have the pumpkin soup, thank you." Kav said and waited for the chef to bring him his soup. He took the plate then asked. "Tell me, mister O'Malley, is the menu of tonight known yet?" He slightly raised his eyebrow as he asked that.
"Uhm.... well no not really....I haven't thought of tonight's menu yet, I'll have to see what hydroponics has available for me first. Why?" Patrick served up the soup and offered a few slices of toast to go with it.
"Oh no reason," Kav said. "I was just interested to know if you already had something in mind." He made his way to the table.
Patrick shook his head and shrugged. "I'm open to suggestions sir. I do take suggestion. I haven't been to hydroponics yet, so the menu is open. Do you have ideas?"
"Ideas?" Kav said, "I have many ideas, but it all depend on how well you can prepare them. Most of these recipes are from my father, whom has been a chef for a long time. Would you be interested of making a special from my father, mister O'Malley?"
"I'm always open to learning to prepare new dishes." Patrick cast the man the broadest grin he could produce. "I'm a chef mister...?
"Kav," Kav replied. "I am the chief Flight operations," he continued to introduce himself. He put the plate back on the counter. He reached in to his uniform and got out data chip. He handed it to Patrick. "These are the recipes I am allowed to share with you. Seeing you are human, and my father is Vulcan, some may surprise you. I would suggest you make the first dish on the list first, it is an Earth dish, Asian I believe. It is one one of my father's favorite dishes." He tilted his head a bit as in thought. "I believe it is called Mie Xau giong, a Vietnamese dish. It is fried noodles. And that is the translation as well. I can not help you with the recipes, as my father is the chef in the family. But I am sure that if you are a good chef, you have no problem deciphering my father's recipes." He just gave a nod. Unlike his father he wasn't really one for showing his emotions.
Patrick simply stared. He'd met his share of Vulcans but none he ever met talked this much. "Your father is a chef? A trained chef?"
"Yes, I believe I mentioned that several times in our conversation. And also, next to being a passionate cook and talker, he is also a better listener. A trade you might want to consider picking up, you may learn more about what the crew likes to eat." He picked up his bowl. "I will finish this now while it is still warm. If you like to continued this conversation, I will be sitting over there." He nodded to a table and then walked to the table and sat down at it.
"Wow..." Patrick murmured under his breath. "Chatty and rude..." He shook his head as he watched the man go. "Did you want dessert to go with that?" he called after him.
Kav stopped and turned around half, "No, mr. O'Malley, I am fine with the soup that you gave me." He walked over to the table and just sat down to eat.
"Alright, let me know if you want more?" Despite his surprise at someone not wanting dessert, Patrick smiled and returned his attention to his food.
Kav finished his soup and walked back to the counter and put his bowl down. "My compliments, mister O'Malley, is there anything I can help you with, before I return to my duties?" He kindly offered.
"No sir, but if you have any recipes you want me to take into consideration for meals, just send them to me and we can go over them some time." Patrick smiled as he took the bowl and put it away. "Did you enjoy your meal?"
Kav took a deep breath before he spoke. "I did, thank you." He thought a moment. "Maybe for dinner, something that goes great with a nice Bordeaux wine. Just a suggestion, you are the chef." He nodded to Patrick.
Patrick nodded. "I'll think of something," he promised. "Dinner's at 1900."
"I'll be on time. Thank you, mister O'Malley." He then walked out of the messhall.
Shaking his head, Patrick resumed his duties.
