Mission:
Run Afoul
Location: Engineering, Point of Explosion
Timeline: MD 7 1500 Hours
1031 words - 2.1 OF Standard Post Measure
ON:
Engineering was a mess, but at least structurally the main bulkheads were stable and damage repair crews had been released to go back into the area. Lieutenant Murphy and his teams had been working for hours already to clear out superficial debris.
"Oye, Lieutenant!" an engineering crewman yelled over the din of workers and motioned for Murph to come see something at the heart of the blast.
"Oh, this is definitely it," Murphy muttered as he approached the spot, the twisted metal bulkheads exposed around it showed a clear radial pattern of damage where an explosion had blasted outward.
The sound of hurried footsteps began to grow louder as Jexasi made her way to the scene of the explosions. "I have this section of the Deck quarantined with security checkpoints at every entry, force fields are in place," she reported. She replaced a loose strand of hair behind her head as she noticed the mangled mess that was the site of the blast. "What have you got so far?" she asked Murph.
Lhaes navigated a safe path through the rubble that was main engineering. He overheard the security chief's question so he saw no point in asking the same thing as he joined them both. "How many were here on duty when it happened?" he asked, already knowing the CEO himself had been absent and as far as he was concerned, was ruled out as perpetrator.
Kav had put on a clean uniform and and was still a bit drowsy from sleeping on a biobed. At least they let him go so he could assist with the repairs in engineering. They could use any able hand they had right now. He walked in on the group of people standing near a pile of rubble, banding together. He stood next to the Romulan. "Is there something interesting over here?" He inquired. He sounded pretty serious, but had he not been a Vulcan, he was attempting at humor.
Jane hadn't been called, she knew she was supposed to wait but she just couldn't stand it. Perhaps she could help with the investigation and get Murphy back to Patrick sooner. "What have you found?" She asked as she approached the group.
As the group gathered around grew larger, it seemed that they had all asked the same question. The half-Betazed briefly scanned the group with her eyes before turning her attention back to Murph. "Now that we're all here, what do you have so far?" she repeated.
Lhaes turned his head towards the Vulcan he had treated earlier. "I don't know if it's interesting but it's curious to say the least. that said, I'm not sure what we're looking for here. I haven't really been able to look around."
"Well, commander, while we wait for the Chief's assessment, as he is taking his time for it, how about we go have a look elsewhere?" Kav offered as he looked around engineering.
"Yes, that seems like a good idea," the Romuan agreed while flipping open his tricorder. "Gives me the chance to keep an eye on you at the same time."
"Oh, by all means, commander," Kav said as he got out a tricorder as well. He walked to the other side of engineering. Looking around with his tricorder. He stopped somewhere and opened his toolkit and put some gloves. He took some debris laying around and put them in one pile and revealed an open panel. He took off his gloves and took his tricorder and leaned next to the open panel ans started to scan it. The wires behind it seem to have no power. "The power has been relayed or cut off to this panel," He kneeled moved the tricorder closer to the wires and moved around behind the panel. "Interesting," He just said.
Joining him, Lhaes leaned closer, peering from his tricorder display to what he was seeing. Carefully, he reached inside and retrieved the object of his attention. "Feathers?" he queried as he examined the brown and cream patterned feathers he held in his hand. "And an egg?" He pointed at the white oval lying between the wires.
"You've got to be kidding me." Jane replied, and she was really anything but amused. She practically pushed Lhaes aside to look, without touching at what he had found. "Well there are chickens in the arboretum. There's a young yeoman who takes care of them. My yeoman in fact."
Unprepared for being literally pushed aside, Lhaes fell over, unable to catch his balance. For a second he lay sprawled on the deck, before crawling back to his feet. "Do you think he's capable of doing this?" he asked pointedly, "why would a chicken be in engineering?"
"No," Jane said, shaking her head but she stopped and thought seriously about it. "He is different, for a Vulcan. But he isn't violent, I've never been concerned about his behavior before. And I don't understand what he would gain from this if I thought him to be guilty. All the same . . . bring him in for questioning. The feathers could easily have been planted here. And the egg. Unless one of the chickens is loose and this has nothing to do with the investigation at all. It's too much of a coincidence to ignore."
"Yes, Captain," Jex replied. "He is currently recovering from an injury sustained in the firing range, I can post extra guards around Sickbay. However until the doctor releases him, interrogations will have to happen in Sickbay."
"I'm sure Dr. Adamson won't mind," Jane was sure she would but there was nothing to be done about that until Stef was released. "You can begin as soon as we're finished here."
"Yes, Captain," Jex nodded as a response.
"I don't understand how a chicken would get into engineering all on its own," Murphy added, sulkily as he crossed his arms. "The next one I see better be on a plate."
