Surgery had taken its toll on both doctors. Their patient was stable but not out of danger yet. Despite their care, their young charge had sustained more fractures during surgery. "I am not certain if we can keep him from fracturing more," Sekat said as he wiped the sleeve of his gown across his brow. "Keeping him unconscious might not be an option either and I doubt we can keep him from fracturing more. Even putting an oxygen mask on him might be dangerous, let alone feeding him. What are your thoughts on it?"
Sandy looked at the monitor and sighed, "I went in to stop the eternal bleeding and prevent that from happening again, I have succeeded. I see that the fracturing had stopped and so has the bleeding." she was in thought a moment as she walked away from the biobed. "We have to somehow prevent more fractures. Prepare for some infusions. That way we can feed him. It will have to do for now. And I want to give him some vitamin cocktails. It's mostly a stop, but it least it will keep is essential vitamins and minerals up. Perhaps we could device something we can keep his body in, preventing him from moving and breaking more bones. Whilst keep outside contact to a minimum. You have a lot more experience what would you suggest, is there something like that in our medical database?"
"We can put him in a tank, make him float in either a fluid or a gel. Keep his face above the surface," Sekat suggested, "perhaps a feeding tube carefully inserted so we can allow him to regain consciousness, just paralyse him from the chest down perhaps?"
Sandy nodded. "I would suggest a gel though, to minimize his movements in the tank. The fluid could make him light, and despite him being paralyzed, he could still float around the tank. In his current state I would like to minimize the margin for error. I will request engineering to set it up immediately." She turned to the biobed again. Never in her life had she had a case like this, it puzzled her. "We can keep him like this for now, till the tank is ready. Has the ensign and his child been taken care of?"
"I should hope so." Sekat glanced down on the unconscious youth. "We should probably inform the captain that her yeoman is out for a while, and see if someone can take care of the creatures in the arboretum for him? Perhaps Miss Razmi can do so? Is he not very close to her?"
Sandy shrugged, "Other than his medical history, I don't follow him around on the ship, I don't really have the time for that." She laughed and continued, 'I also don't really have time for gossip and rumors. We will ask miss Razmi see if she can do it."
"I will talk to her if you like, you are needed here in the infirmary." He smiled at her, almost proudly so. "Your call," he offered.
She nodded. "You are right, thank you, Sekat. I will watch over the patient. I will clean up first. You should too, before you get to miss Razmi." She grinned to him.
"Obviously," tje Vulcan deadpanned, "I can hardly see her in a bloody gown." He touched her shoulder with his still gloves hand. "You did very well Sandra, you have saved this boy's life. I will change and see Miss Razmi. Meet you in the mess later for dinner?"
Sandy smiled and took off her gloves. "Dinner in the mess would be lovely." She sighed and said, "Stef reminded why I wanted to be a doctor, and having you there helped a lot."
"I am here to serve," Sekat answered, pulling off his gloves to touch her cheek. "I will go see Razmi. This is why we are doctors, because we want to help. You go get some rest, I will let you know if his condition changes."
Sandy smiled as she touched his hand. "Cleaning up first." She then walked to the clean room to get herself out of the attire and washed up. Not only was she smelling of blood and rubber, she also smelled of sweat, despite the room being cooled, the entire operation was enough to make one perspire.
Sekat watched her go, then left sickbay to see to his next daunting task.
