A Shift in Position

Jane made herself a cup of tea and sat down at her desk. They were going nowhere until they figured out exactly what had gone wrong with the nacelle. And in the meantime she had a few details to take care of. The chime sounded and Jane called, "Come in," knowing exactly who it would be as she was expecting her.
Stepping in through Thursday doorway, Laural moved to stand on the opposite side of the desk from Jane. She wasn’t 100% sure why she’d been asked to come, but with the number of recent transfers from her department, she had an idea. “You wanted to see me captain?”
"Yes, I have a proposition for you." Jane realized how that sounded and cleared her throat. "A position has opened up and I thought you might be interested. Right now you are only Encryption specialist but you could be moved to Chief Strategic Operations Officer. What are your thoughts on this?"
Laural was speechless for a moment before finding her tongue, “um, it would be an honour, but what about the intelligence department, with all the recent transfers, I’m the most senior officer left to run it”
"Honestly there's not much to do in that department and I was thinking of combining it with Strategic Operations. Our intel is usually given to us before a mission and anything that we need to find out, well we already have the people in other positions who can investigate. Lieutenant T'Par will be moving to our science department."
After a moments thought, Laural nodded, “very well, I humbly accept the position of chief strategic operations officer. Though the change in uniform will take some getting used to”
Jane smiled. "I'll let you in on a little secret. Even the Captain's uniform fits the same, it's just a different color. So . . . . you can start anytime you're ready."
Laural returned the smile, "I think the sooner we sort this out, the better for the ship. Though I would like to convert the Intelligence office into one for my new department. It already has the intelligence feeds built in and it would not be difficult to convert a few of the consoles to handle fleet operations or other similar tasks."
"Fine by me. Enjoy your new position Lieutenant. " Jane paused to see if there was anything else. Everything on her end seemed wrapped up in a neat little bow.
"Before I go and start rearranging things, is there anything I should know?" Laural asked
"There will be a briefing soon on our current situation, I think it's best if we all meet there and discuss it, that way no one is left out and we can all produce our evidence." Jane replied with small smile.
Laural nodded, “understood, than I shall be sure to attend the meeting”
"Good," Jane said getting up and offering her hand out. "Good luck Lieutenant."
Taking the offered hand, Laural nodded, “thank you captain” she said before turning around and making her way out the the office.
