Mission: Run Afoul
Location: Chief security office

Sandy returned to sickbay only to find Stef's bed empty. "What on Earth happened here, where is my patient?" She almost shouted through sickbay. She looked around and found a nurse with a stack of pads. "Nurse! Where is crewman Stef? Where is my patient?"

The nurse looked and then said, "Doctor, it was security, they came in here and took him away. They arrested him."

"Oh hell, no!" Sandy said as she turned around and walked out of sickbay heading towards the security chief's office. She walked in to the turbolift and pushed out a deck number. And waited for the turbolift to take her there. She tapped her foot impatient. When the lift doors finally opened she just walked in.

"Lieutenant Rai, I would like an explanation as to why you arrested my patient and put him in the brig?" She didn't wait for an answer and just continued on, her cheeks all red, "This is in clear violation of starfleet medical regulations, or any medical regulations anywhere. you can't take a patient in to custody without the medical officer clearing the patient for discharge. I demand the immediate release of the crewman to sickbay!"

Seeing the doctor burst through the door startled Jex, probably less than the anger she felt pouring off of Sandra scared her. Not showing any of that, Jex held her hands in an apologetic manner. "First, you are right, I should have asked you first. I made a judgment call for the safety of the crew. Second, I can not release the crewman, though you and your staff are free to provide any treatment. There is enough phyisical evidence that points to him being the bomber in Engineering that prevents me from allowing him to rejoin the ship's population."

"The bomber? Where is your evidence, lieutenant? That boy couldn't even put a bomb together even if his life depended on it. And also, that boy is so injured he couldn't be of any harm to anyone on this ship right now," Sandy said. "I have just requested counseling for that boy. And what happened to posting security officers outside of sickbay? I can't threat my patient in a brig." She took a deep breath and continued, "What can he possibly do, Lieutenant? You are a security chief, tell me, is he a threat? Can you in all righteousness say he is a threat?"

"By himself? No," Jexasi admitted. "The site of the explosion had chicken feathers at the epicenter. His main job is to care for the animals aboard the ship, among them chickens." She paused for only a moment as if that was pretty clear evidence. "When I talked to him in Sickbay, he admitted that he delivered a package to that section of Engineering," she said. Putting the pieces together for the Doctor, she added, "So while he may not have built the bomb or even activated it, there is clear evidence that he was the reason why it was in Engineering. In the very least, it leads us to suspect that he is involved."

Sandy seemed a bit in thought as the security chief explained it to her. "So let me get this straight, a yeoman, whose job it is to deliver stuff for the person they work for, in this case the captain. Delivers a package to engineering." She laughed. "I am no lawyer but isn't that a little circumstantial?" She shook her head and then said, "If he had fallen ill and another Yeoman took his place, they would be in the brig now. But the only evidence you really have is a bunch of feathers, which is practically nothing. So maybe he is involved, and maybe he is just a stupid kid that was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fact remains, and you were there, he shot himself in the chest. And you didn't follow procedures. If he requests legal counseling, the counselor would have you hung for this one."

"The Captain did not ask for the delivery," Jex offered, "Had the Captain asked him to bring the package to Engineering, he wouldn't be sitting in the Brig." However one of the things she said did ring true, "I am not accusing Stef of acting alone, or even knowingly involving himself. However, he can tell me who gave him the package, what their demeanor was." Locking eyes with the doctor, she asked, "If the bomber, or someone influenced by them, decided to come to Sickbay and take care of loose ends, how long would it take you to call for Security? Enough time to stop a phaser blast, or a stabbing? Confinement in the Brig is safer and prevents a minor self-inflicted phaser burn from being the least of his worries."

"I still don't like it that my patient was taken from sickbay," Sandy replied. "I think I will take it up with the Captain. No need to antagonized security much longer." She walked back to the entrance to the office. She turned around and said, "Oh, let your brig officer know I'll be coming to treat my patient soon. And please, not more taking my patients without my consultation." She then walked out of the office."

"Deal," Jex offered. While she knew that she did the right thing, her method most definitely needed to be improved. Hopefully, the Captain would see it her way and the result would not be very painful. Only when the doctor's presence get far enough away to blend into the background noise did Jexasi relax a little. Tapping her commbadge, she said, "Ensign Wexler, Doctor Adamson will drop by soon to examine Stef."
